Happy Memorial day, everybody! Summer was nice enough to come back for the holiday weekend, but apparently holiday isn't in my vocabulary. I was up at 5 ish this morning, out in the garden by 5:30 getting to work! It's nice to finally get a break from all the crazy storms and monsoon-like rains long enough for the garden to dry out and finish my planting. <insert a billion !!s> Well, I haven't finished yet... but the good news is now that planting is at national emergency critical level I can finally get some real help! I hate the fact that's how things work around here, but it is what it is so I'm just glad something's finally getting done.
So today we got the
slaves boys up nice and early (they got to sleep in like and hour after me! Unfair! :P) to start raking weeds and rocks out of the garden and help make furrows for the beans and corn. Boy, what a production! It's almost as much work to direct everybody what to do as it is to just get in there and do it myself. It's just slightly less stress on my poor decrepit joints. But after a few
hundred times of explaining how to make a straight row, I think they finally got the hang of it. Unfortunately there still seems to be some sort of miscommunication on what "get the weeds/roots out of the dirt" means. Ha ha! I'm just glad to get some help though... and now the planting = almost 2/3 done! w00t!
I still have to do the squash/melons myself, because my layout and "experimental methods" are going to be just too complicated to explain to the boys. I also hafta get some more mulch to put down. Someone donated us a whole bunch of hay, but it's still not enough to cover that big huge garden. I should take a picture of it. It's big. Really big. But not big enough, considering how many people it has to feed, I suspect. That remains to be seen. In the meantime, I'm hoping to be done planting soon! Yayness! Then I just have to concentrate on pulling weeds and harvesting veggies and putting them up. Ahhhh, there's no end to the work! ^_^
